Support Women Grad Cap Display

This display is intended to raise awareness about the number of student parents who exist, along with the issues that can arise when these students are not given proper support. Through this display, you will advocate for more resources for student parents. The visual of the grad caps will help bring more students into discussion with you and your group. Use the event guide below to plan a Support Women Grad Cap Display on your campus.

Step 1

Do your homework.

  1. Before hosting your display, you need to be prepared to explain what resources are available on your campus and where your campus can improve. Feel free to reach out to your Regional Coordinator for help with this by emailing [yourstate]@studentsforlife.org.
  2.  You can find more information about the rights of pregnant and parenting students on campus here.
Step 2

Gather Your Supplies

  1. Event signs: These will be posted near your display on a wall or a post explaining the meaning of the caps and the purpose of the display.
  2. Posters: Your group may want to hold posters with encouraging messages such as these.
    • “Students for Life supports pregnant and parenting students.”
    • “Pregnancy doesn’t have to change your goals.”
    • “Pregnant? We will stand by you.”
    • “You are strong. You are beautiful. You are not alone.”
    • “Equal opportunities for ALL students!”
  3. Handouts with information like:
    • Pregnancy or non-discrimination policies. You can use a specific, supportive policy at your campus, a campus Title IX statement, or general Title IX information.
    • What your group can offer, including contact information and the Standing With You website.
    • Pregnancy support advocates on and off campus (your local pregnancy resource center).
    • Title IX Coordinator
    • Other helpful on-campus resources like family housing, childcare, scholarships, lactation rooms, diaper decks, and maternity parking.
  4. Graduation Caps: (see this YouTube video for help). Not that crafty? Print grad cap pictures from Google onto a heavy, durable paper, and then cut out.
    • Heavy paper (black or school colors)
    • Yarn
    • Pencil
    • Ruler
    • Glue
    • Scissors
  5. Display Board (optional): If you opted to print pictures of your grad caps, you will want to display them on trifold boards or attach them to a banner.
  6. Resources Table (optional): See handout suggestions below.
Step 3

Reserve your space and advertise.

  1. Decide where and how you plan to display your graduation caps and reserve your space with the Student Activities Office. Options to display the caps include:
    • Assembly on a display board
    • Hanging in a hallway or classroom
    • Attached or hanging from a fence
    • Around the railing of an upper level of your Student Union
    • Hanging from trees or posts along a student walkway
  2. Create flyers advertising your event and post them 1-2 weeks prior to your event. Post about the upcoming event on your group’s social media accounts and ask your members to share on their personal social media accounts.
Step 4

Set up and do your event!

  1. If you choose to set up the night before, be aware that this occasionally creates an opportunity for vandalism. It is recommended that you set up an hour before your event so that you can monitor your display.
  2. Get out there and have a great time!
