National Pro-Life Day of Silent of Solidarity
On October 18th, thousands of young people in high schools and on college campuses will make a commitment to be silent for all or part of the day, with many taping their mouths shut with red tape, the word LIFE emblazoned across it.
They will carry printed materials about why they are giving up their voices for a day to speak up for those who have no voice in our nation – the unborn children in the womb.
This observance was started by Bryan Kemper. Back in 2004, a college student in Louisiana asked him how he could work in solidarity with students across the country. That simple question served as the catalyst for the day that has spread around the globe and has involved hundreds of thousands of people since its inception.
Step 1
Before the Event:
- Register here for the event.
- Spread the word! Tell your pro-life group and other like minded organizations on campus.
- Gather supplies you will need for the day:
- Red duct tape
- Red fabric or bandanas
- Black permanent markers
- Optional: pro-life t-shirts to wear on Silent Day. Check out SFLAshop.org for some great options for you and your group!
- Have some print materials to hand out to explain why you have duct tape or sashes on. You can make a half-page with this info:
- Every October, students nationwide give up their voices for the National Pro-Life Day of Silent Solidarity. Representing the 1,060+ voices taken by abortion every day in the U.S., students choose to take a one-day vow of silence and wear red tape/armband in solidarity with those whose voices have been silenced forever. Contact (your group's contact info) to get in touch and learn more.
- Choose a highly-trafficked spot on campus to stand together with your group for a time period that works well for your members. Make sure to follow campus rules for reserving the space, if necessary.
- Pick a time to gather on Silent Day to affix your tape and sashes.
Step 2
During the Event
- Have your supplies ready to go and begin the day in silent remembrance.
- Take pictures and post to social media, explaining the meaning behind Silent Day.
-
If your group faces discrimination or harassment on campus, contact [email protected] for support. Appoint someone to have their phone ready to record horizontally if any incidents occur.
-
Reach out to like-minded groups on campus and ask to give an announcement at their meetings.
Step 3
After the Event
- Set a time to meet as a group to discuss the impact off Silent Day. You may want to discuss:
- How did our visual reminder of abortion affect our campus?
- What was the most difficult part of the day?
- How can we take the pro-life message we sent to campus on Silent Day even further? (Hint: ask your Regional Coordinator for ideas!)
- Begin planning your next outreach event on campus! If you are not yet connected to the Students for Life Regional Coordinator for your area, please email [YourState]@StudentsforLife.org, for example, [email protected].
